Fresh Faces Lead India Against Zimbabwe in T20 Series

India, the newly crowned T20 World Champions, are set for a five-match T20 series against Zimbabwe, starting today at the Harare Sports Club. This marks India's first bilateral series in Zimbabwe since 2016. All matches will be played at the same venue, starting at 4:30 PM IST and will be televised and streamed live in India.

Following the recent retirements of veterans like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, a youthful Indian squad will take the field. Star players Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, and bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah will also be absent.

Shubman Gill will lead this young Indian team, featuring talented players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, and Ravi Bishnoi. Openers Abhishek Sharma, known for his six-hitting prowess in IPL 2024, along with Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, and Tushar Deshpande might even get their T20 debuts.

For the first two matches, some members of the World Cup-winning squad - Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, and Yashasvi Jaiswal - will be rested. They'll be replaced by B Sai Sudarshan, Jitesh Sharma, and Harshit Rana. Originally selected Nitish Kumar Reddy had to withdraw due to injury.

Historically, India has dominated Zimbabwe in T20 Internationals, winning six out of eight encounters. However, both of Zimbabwe's victories came in Harare. The last meeting between the two sides was in the 2022 T20 World Cup, where India triumphed by 71 runs thanks to Suryakumar Yadav's blazing 61 off just 25 balls.
